Enze Postecoglou has expressed his confidence in Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.
Hojbjerg has been a stalwart for Tottenham Hotspur for the past three seasons. He started his career at Bayern Munich and Southampton and has made a name for himself at Spurs. While he may look a bit rugged, his work rate and range of motion are unrivaled, and the energy he exudes on the pitch has a positive effect on his teammates. This led to him leading Tottenham’s midfield and making a whopping 145 appearances in three years.
This season, however, he’s been a candidate. New Spurs manager, Enze Postecoglou, decided that Joivier didn’t fit his philosophy and dropped him from the starting lineup. Instead, he built a new midfield with Pape Matasar and Yves Bissouma.
It’s a bleak situation for Hojbjerg. His position is further complicated by the fact that Spurs are doing well without him. Currently, Spurs are unbeaten in eight league games and sit atop the table. Even against the likes of Arsenal, Manchester United, and Liverpool, they haven’t backed down at all, producing meaningful results in every game.
Hojbjerg quickly became a candidate. He has also been linked with a transfer. Last summer, both Atletico Madrid and Fulham pursued the player, with Fulham identifying him as a replacement for João Palinha, who was in talks with Bayern Munich, and Atletico looking to bolster their midfield. Of course, the deal didn’t happen. Hojbjerg didn’t want to move to Fulham, and Atletico’s offer wasn’t enough to convince Tottenham.
Nevertheless, the transfer rumors continue. This time, Juventus have joined the race. The Bianconeri have recently lost Paul Pogba to a suspension due to doping allegations. The Bianconeri have been monitoring Hojbjerg as one of his replacements.
However, Postecoglou has no intention of selling him just yet. Speaking at his pre-match press conference ahead of the Fulham game, he said: “There was never a time during the transfer window that I thought he would leave. I spoke to him, he wanted to stay here, he wanted to be part of the project we are building. It’s natural 안전놀이터 for a player who was once a starter to want more playing time. But ultimately, we’re playing better and he needs time,” he said.
“In the game we won late, he played an important role. He helped us a lot. He’s still a really important player. He’s doing well every day and he’ll get opportunities during the season. It’s up to him to capitalize on those opportunities.”
