‘Life is like Heo Do Hwan,’ first ever telecom three-party championship catcher

LG Twins’ Heo Do-hwan (39) has won his third career Korean Series title.

LG defeated the KT Wiz 6-2 in Game 5 of the best-of-seven Shinhan Bank SOL Korean Series 2023 at Jamsil Stadium in Seoul on April 13. With the victory, LG, which improved to 4-1 in the series, returned to the top of the Korean Series for the first time in 29 years after winning the 1994 title.

Heo, who signed a two-year, 400 million won free agent contract with LG after the 2021 season, underperformed this season, batting 1-for-44 (9-for-64) with two home runs, 10 RBIs and a .524 OPS in 47 games. At the beginning of the season, he was jokingly told by manager Yoon Kyung-yeop to retire. However, he made the first team in June and served as a backup catcher, helping LG win the regular season title. In the Korean Series, he came in as a pinch-hitter in Game 4 on Nov. 11 and hit a one-out double.

In an interview after the win, Heo said, “I feel so good. It’s great to come to LG and win a championship, and I hope we can do it again next year. We are also thinking about next year, so we will try to do it again next year,” he said.

After playing for six teams (Doosan, Kiwoom, Hanwha, SSG, KT, and LG), Heo became the first player to win the Korean Series with all three telecom companies, winning the title with SK (now SSG) in 2018, KT in 2021, and LG this year. Since SK was sold to SSG in 2021, he may be the last player to win a title with all three telecom companies. “I don’t think anyone else can do it, unless (Kim) Kwang-hyun is transferred,” Heo laughed.

“I always feel good whenever I win,” Heo said, adding, “It was the same in 2018, it was the same in 2021, and it’s the same now. It’s always good, so I want to win again.”

“I have the second most wins on my team,” said Heo, who added, “(Ham) Deok-joo has the most. They say this is the fourth time for the Doosan dynasty (2015, 2017, 2019, 2023). This is my third, and I don’t want it to be the last,” he said, revealing his dream of building an LG dynasty.

Heo Do-hwan, who didn’t make it to the first team until June, said, “I had a hard time at the beginning of the season because the coach told me he was going to retire. He told me to prepare in the second team, but he told me to play one game every two days to get a feel for the game, so I thought I’d get up there soon, but I didn’t get up there for two months. So I thought I should retire, but he called me back. I think I helped the team in some way, and I think that’s why I can feel like I won,” he said, reflecting on his year.

Heo Do-hwan, who hit a game-winning double in the fourth inning, said, “I cried when I saw the fans cheering. I was going to hit a fastball, but I didn’t because the 토토사이트 fans liked my cheer, but I’m so grateful and happy that I got a hit and they liked the cheer.” He expressed his gratitude to the fans.
