The celebration’s focal point will be a re-creation of the town’s original land sale and “the world’s largest birthday cake” on May 15.
Other plans:
New Year’s Eve celebration with 200 “sky cannons,” increased lighting on the Strip, a historic video projected from hotels and casinos, and live performances by big-name entertainers.
In January there will be a new Las Vegas Walk of Fame by the Fremont Street Experience with 18-inch bronze “gaming chips” placed in the downtown sidewalks to honor Vegas legends like Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, Howard Hughes and Liberace. Ten chips will be added each month throughout 2005.
Helldorado Days parades return May 14. The parades featuring kids, long-time residents and hotel and casino floats, died out in 1997 after 62 years.
Other celebrations include 100 murals created all over Vegas, 100 weddings involving couples from all over the nation, a centennial quilt, a commissioned musical piece, an antique airplane parade, a centennial time capsule, a lighted pioneer wagon parade, a folk life festival, an outdoor centennial sculpture, and a June 15-18 celebration of the Mormon Church’s short-lived effort to create a fort-mission in the Las Vegas Valley in 1855-1857
