Galatasaray, Uruguayan MF ‘love call’ → Tottenham also hopeful

Rodrigo Bentancur, the Uruguayan midfielder who sparked controversy with his racist comments, continues to receive offers from Turkic giants Galatasaray.

“Ligue 1 champions Galatasaray are lining up an ambitious bid for the Tottenham star,” reported SpursWeb, a British outlet that focuses on Tottenham news.

Galatasaray, along with Besiktas and Fenerbahce, is one of the most prestigious clubs in the Turkiye Lig. They have won the most titles in the league’s history (24) and were crowned league champions in 2023-24 with 102 points (33 W, 3 D, 2 L).

After finishing the season as Ligue 1 champions, Galatasaray will be looking to strengthen their squad for next season in the summer transfer window. SpursWeb claimed that Galatasaray could be looking to sign Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg or Rodrigo Bentancur to bolster their midfield.

“Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg has also been a target of interest for Galatasaray,” the outlet explained, noting that “Turkkiye Press Taksim claimed that Galatasaray are waiting for a final decision from Hojbjerg on who they want to add to their squad.”

“However, it seems that Hojbjerg is not the only Tottenham midfielder on Galatasaray’s radar, as Bentancur is also a player they are interested in.”

“Galatasaray are looking at loan and purchase options to sign Bentancur,” the outlet said, citing Turquoise media outlet Aspor. “Tottenham will consider selling Bentancur if a good offer comes in, as his contract expires in two years.”

“The presence of Uruguayan teammates Lucas Torreira and Fernando Muslera in the squad will be attractive to Bentancur, and the player is said to be positive about Galatasaray’s interest,” he added, “but the Turkiye report is characterized by optimism regarding the transfer.”

The same outlet that broke the news of Galatasaray’s interest in Bentancur went on to mention Bentancur’s racist comments.

Bentancur recently came under fire for racially insulting clubmate and captain Son Heung-min and people in his native South Korea. He was asked by an interviewer on his home country’s Por la camiseta program, “Can you get me a Korean jersey because I already have yours?”

Bentancur’s favorite Korean is Tottenham teammate Son Heung-min, so the question was actually asking if he could get him a Son jersey.

“Sonny?” he replied. When the host then said, “The world 안전놀이터 champion’s is good,” Bentancur responded, “Or how about Sonny’s cousin’s, they all look the same,” sparking controversy.

Bentancur’s comment that Asians look so similar that it’s hard to tell them apart is clearly racist. As the controversy grew, Bentancur quickly wrote an apology.

“Sonny my brother, I apologize for what happened to you. It was a very bad joke!” and tagged Son Heung-min’s account in the apology, writing, “Please know that I love you, I don’t disrespect you, and I never meant to hurt you or anyone else! I love you my brother!”

“I want to communicate with all my fans and those who ‘follow’ me,” Bentancur wrote on social media again on Feb. 22, saying, “I was referring to Son Heung-min and no one else, and I had a conversation with him and informed him of our deep friendship, and he (Son Heung-min) misunderstood that this stemmed from an unfortunate misunderstanding.”

“I sincerely apologize if anyone was offended by my words,” he continued, “but I want you to know that I was not referring to anyone else (other than Son Heung-min). And I was 파워볼사이트 only talking to Son Heung-min. It was not my intention to offend anyone else, directly or indirectly,” he said.

SpursWeb believes that the controversial Bentancur will leave Tottenham this summer if a good offer comes in, as his contract expires in June 2026.

“Bentancur, who has been widely criticized for his recent controversial comments, is likely to leave the club, especially if Tottenham decide to act on their interest in Connor Gallagher (Chelsea),” the publication claimed.

Spurs are reportedly looking at a number of midfielders this summer to bolster their midfield, with Chelsea’s England midfielder Conor Gallagher being touted as a potential target for Spurs.

“However, with two years left on his contract and with Son Heung-min acknowledging and responding to the controversy, it is unlikely that Bentancur will be willing to step away from Europe’s top five leagues at the age of 26,” he said, adding that the player may refuse to go to Turquille.
