Hong Kong-listed SJM Holdings Limited reported overall gaming revenue of $2.61 billion in the six months to the end of June, down 2% from a year earlier, as VIP gaming revenue fell 3.4% and slot revenue fell 3.2%.

On top of the bad news, SJM Holdings Limited explained that adjusted earnings for the first half of interest, tax, depreciation and amortization fell 7.7% year-over-year to $192.88 million, while margins fell 0.5 percentage point on average to 7.3%.

Macau’s total gaming revenue increased by 17.2% over the period,” SJM Holdings Limited said. “Two large casino resorts in the Macau-Kotai area were opened by competitors in the second half of the year. According to figures from the Macau Government Bureau of Statistics and Census, visits to Macau rose 5.4 percent to 15.6 million, of which mainland visitors rose 6.1 percent to 10.3 million, or 66.4 percent of the total.”

All of this left the operator with a profit of $122.14 million that left a six-month profit, down 12.9% compared to the same period, while earnings per share fell at the same rate, just over 2 cents.

“The Group’s performance in the second half of the year will still be affected by overall economic performance, government regulatory policy and the level of visits to Macau in the surrounding region, as well as the competition of Macau casino operators,” read a statement from SJM Holdings Limited. “During this period, the group is committed to maintaining its strength in the mass market and VIP gaming sectors as it strives to improve operational efficiency. The group is optimistic about its performance for the rest of the year.”
