Goyang Sono’s Kim Kang-seon ends his 15-year career as a professional basketball player and starts anew as a coach.

Sono announced on the 21st, “Kim Kang-seon is taking his first steps as a coach after 15 years as a professional athlete.”

He added, “We will hold a retirement ceremony for Kim Kang-seon at the home opening game of the 2024-2025 season.”

Kim Kang-seon made his professional debut wearing the Daegu Orions uniform as the 8th pick in the first round of the 2009 rookie draft.

From the 2011-2012 season, when the Orions moved to Goyang, Gyeonggi-do, through Day One in the 2022-2023 season, and Sono last season, he played only for the Goyang team for about 12 years.

Kim Kang-seon participated in a total of 576 regular league games, playing an average of 15 minutes and 53 seconds, recording 4.3 points, 1.3 rebounds, and 0.8 assists.

Last season, he served as the first captain of the new team Sono and played an average of 19 minutes and 20 seconds in 46 regular league games, averaging 4.4 points, 1.8 rebounds, and 0.9 assists.

Kim Kang-seon expressed his thoughts on retirement, saying, “(Retirement) still doesn’t feel real,” and “Thanks to the fans and family who always supported me, I enjoyed playing as a player for 15 years.

He then pledged, “I am grateful to the club for allowing me to achieve my dream of becoming a leader. I will learn a lot and become a leader who studies, contributing to nurturing good juniors.”
