Shinhan Bank selects Japan international Tanimura No. 1 overall in inaugural Asian Quarterly Draft…9 WKBL players on the board

Former Japan women’s national basketball team member Rika Tanimura (185 cm) has been selected as the No. 1 overall pick in the Korea Women’s Basketball League (WKBL) Asia Quarterly Player Draft for the 2024-2025 season.

Incheon Shinhan Bank selected Tanimura with the No. 1 overall pick at the Asian Quarterly Draft event in Tokyo, Japan, on March 23.

The 6-foot-5 guard is a former member of Japan’s 2022 FIBA Women’s World Cup qualifying team.

“Last year, she trained with us for two weeks and showed a good performance,” said Shinhan Bank head coach Gunadan Gunadan. “She recently had a knee injury, but if she builds her body well and takes care of her knee, 바카라사이트 her performance will improve.”

“I’ve been rehabilitating from an ACL tear in August 2023,” said Tanimura, “and I’m really happy to be playing basketball in Korea again, despite the difficulties of my first major injury.”

Busan BNK, which had the second pick, selected Saki Iijima (173 centimeters).

Bucheon Hana OneQ’s Yurina Watabe (166 centimeters), Yongin Samsung Life Insurance’s Mitsuki Hirano (166 centimeters), Cheongju KB’s Moe Nagata (174 centimeters), and Asan Woori Bank’s Momona Miyasaka (163 centimeters) were selected in the third through sixth rounds.

In the second round, Woori Bank’s Natsuki Sunagawa (162 centimeters), KB’s Moe Shida (166 centimeters), and Hana OneQ’s Yuzuki Ishida (168 centimeters) were selected.

Ishida, who was the last player picked, said, “Thank you for choosing me. I will continue to work hard to help the team,” Ishida said in Korean.

The WKBL announced in April this year that it will introduce an Asian quota player system starting in the 2024-2025 season, and it will be open to Japanese players, including those from Japan’s W-League.

Each team can have a maximum of two players and they cannot play at the same time.
