Weiss wins debut with 6 shutout innings, 7 K’s, manager pleased

Baseball’s Hanwha Eagles celebrated the debut win of injury replacement foreign pitcher Ryan Weiss.

Hanwha won a 5-4 home game against the Doosan Bears of the 2024 Shinhan SOL Bank KBO League on Friday at Hanwha Life Eagles Park in Daejeon, South Korea. Hanwha, which entered Tuesday’s game on a seven-game winning streak, remained in seventh place with a 34-40-2 record (.459 winning percentage).

Weiss, a temporary replacement on the disabled list with elbow soreness, earned the win in his debut with six innings of four-hit, two-run ball with seven strikeouts and no walks. Weiss, who signed a six-week, $100,000 contract with Hanwha on July 17 as an injury replacement foreign player, pitched flawlessly in his debut. He dominated the Doosan lineup with a mix of sweepers (33), curveballs (7), and changeups (4), centered around a fastball that topped out at 153 mph (54).

A walk to Henry Ramos and a single to Jae-Hwan Kim in the first inning put runners on second and third, but Weiss, who got out of the first inning by inducing a grounder to shortstop, gave up a single to Lee in the second but retired the next three batters. He struck out Kang Seung-ho on a high fastball and three swinging strikes. In the third inning, Jeong Soo-bin singled, stole second base, and catcher Choi Jae-hoon made a throwing error, putting runners on second and third, but Weiss got Kim Jae-hwan to fly out to right field with a changeup.

The fourth inning was the real crisis. Yang gave up a single to Seok-hwan Yang and a full count walk to Kyung-min Heo to put runners on first and second with no outs. But Weiss didn’t falter. He induced Kang Seung-ho to fly out to right field with a high fastball and then struck out Lee Yoo-chan on a three-pitch walk. He then threw a low slider to Cho Sung-eun for a grounder to first base to end the inning.

In the fifth and sixth innings, he shut down the Doosan bats with back-to-back strikeouts. In the fifth, he struck out Ramos with a low, full fastball, and in the sixth, he struck out Kim Jae-hwan and Yang Seok-hwan with a high fastball and an outside sweeper, respectively. He did his job with 98 total pitches through the sixth inning. He threw 67 strikes for strikes, a 68.4 percent rate, and was aggressive with his pitches. His six strikeouts, including two on three pitches, were all offspeed pitches.

Hanwha’s bats responded with a big five-run inning in the fifth. The leadoff hitter, Hwang Young-mook, capitalized on a lucky infield hit when his grounder went out of bounds in front of Doosan first baseman Yang Seok-hwan. A run-and-hit sign appeared on a 2-1 pitch count for Lee Do-yoon. After Lee singled to left-center and Hwang Young-mook, who had started the game, stole 카지노사이트 third, Hanwha had runners on first and third with no outs when Choi Jae-hoon drew a walk after a seven-pitch at-bat.

Lee Won-seok flied out to right field on the first pitch, but Jonathan Peraza drove it straight down the line for the go-ahead run. Doosan removed Choi Won-joon and brought in Lee Young-ha, but Hanwha didn’t let up. After Ahn Chi-hong singled to right, Noh Si-hwan’s grounder to second off the pitcher’s glove allowed Joo to score from third. A stolen base by Noh put runners on second and third, and Chae Eun-sung capped off the five-run inning with a double down the left-field line.

The bullpen was a little shaky. Han Seung-hyuk gave up a three-run homer to Kim Jae-hwan in the eighth inning, but after Park Sang-won pitched ⅔ of a scoreless inning, Joo Hyun-sang preserved the lead in the ninth. He gave up a double to Kang Seung-ho and a single to pinch-hitter Kim Ki-yeon, but did not allow the tying run to score and earned his 11th save of the season.

After the game, Hanwha head coach Kim Kyung-moon said, “Weiss pitched well and did a good job as a starter. It was a little difficult in the second half of the game because we couldn’t get out of the jam, but our closer, Joo Hyun-sang, did a good job,” said Kim.

“It’s a great feeling to get a win in front of the fans,” Weiss said. I think I showed them everything I could, but I also realized that I didn’t do enough. I’ll work on what I can improve on before my next start so I can be better prepared,” Weiss said of his first win.

Hanwha announced right-hander Moon Dong-ju as the starter against Doosan on the 26th. Raul Alcantara will start for Doosan.
